Surprisingly Simple and Sustainable: My Fun and Easy Interior Design Secrets

Daily writing prompt
Are there things you try to practice daily to live a more sustainable lifestyle?

Living sustainably doesn’t mean sacrificing style or comfort. Let me share some of my favorite and surprisingly simple ways to practice sustainable interior design, that help me create a beautiful, eco-friendly home that reflects my personality and values.

Upcycling Old Furniture into Unique Pieces ♻️

One of the most exciting aspects of sustainable design is giving new life to old furniture. Instead of discarding pieces that have seen better days, I find creative ways to upcycle them.

  • Repurposed Dresser: An old wooden dresser can be sanded down and repainted with vibrant colors or stencils to become a chic sideboard or a unique statement piece for the entryway.
  • Reimagined Coffee Table: Transform an outdated coffee table into a stylish ottoman by adding padding and fabric of your choice. Local carpenters can assist with more complex transformations if you’re not a DIY enthusiast.
  • Reupholstered Dining Chairs: Reupholster old dining chairs with bold, dark green, or sage green plant and floral patterned fabrics to complement your indoor plants and create a green haven in your home.

Repurposing Everyday Items for Decor 🔄

I love repurposing items to serve new functions in my home. This reduces waste and adds a touch of creativity and personality to my space.

  • Ladder Plant Stand: A vintage ladder can be repurposed as a tiered plant stand for your indoor garden.
  • Old Guitar Shelves: Repurpose an old guitar by removing the front panel and adding small shelves inside. This creates a unique and artistic shelving unit perfect for small decor items or books.
  • Vintage Window Frames: Repurpose old window frames as picture frames or mirrors. Sand and repaint them to match your decor style.
  • Recycled Tile Coasters: Use leftover tiles from home renovations to create unique coasters. Paint or add felt to the bottom to protect surfaces.
  • Copper Pipe Shelves: Use copper pipes and fittings to create minimalist and industrial-style shelves that are both functional and stylish.
  • Wine Cork Boards: Glue wine corks together to make custom bulletin boards or trivets. These add a rustic touch and are incredibly practical.
  • Reclaimed Wood: Use reclaimed wood for shelves, tables, or headboards. It adds character and reduces the demand for new lumber.

Creative Decor with Natural Elements 🍃

Bringing nature indoors is not only sustainable but also incredibly refreshing.

  • Pebble Accents: Arrange pebbles in a shallow dish with candles for a zen garden vibe, or use them to create a pebble mat for your bathroom or entryway. This adds a natural touch and provides a soothing foot massage.
  • Seashell Accents: Create unique decor items using collected seashells, such as wind chimes, candle holders, or framed wall art.
  • Pressed Flower Art: Preserve the beauty of flowers by pressing them and creating art pieces or decorative accents like bookmarks or coasters.

Unconventional Fabric Uses 🧵

Instead of common textile transformations, try these unique ideas to refresh your space sustainably.

  • Fabric-Wrapped Planters: Use old fabric to wrap around plain pots and planters, securing them with glue or twine for a customized look.
  • Scarf Lampshades: Transform an old scarf into a new lampshade by draping it over an existing frame. This can add a pop of color and pattern to your lighting.
  • Quilted Table Runners: Combine fabric scraps into a quilted table runner. This adds a personal touch to your dining area and is a great way to use leftover materials.
  • No-Sew Cushion Covers: Use fabric glue or iron-on tape to create new cushion covers without sewing. This is a quick and easy way to refresh your pillows.

It’s all about being creative, resourceful, and mindful of our impact on the planet. So, why not give it a try and see how you can transform your space sustainably? 🌟
