The Instruments (Part 2)

14k Burkart Elite Rose Gold Flute

Burkart’s Elite flute is one of the most explicit examples of material as acoustic architecture. The maker says the Elite can be configured in silver, gold, platinum, and 14K rose-gold variants, with soldered tone holes and the micro-Link pinless mechanism; the 14K rose-gold version is price on request, while other Elite configurations are publicly listed up to $30,200. A current dealer listing for a Burkart Elite with 14K gold and silver keys is $34,600. That puts the interior in the realm of high-precision metallurgy: tone holes, risers, keywork, and wall thickness are all doing acoustic work before the note even leaves the instrument.

Australian Yidaki / Didgeridoo

The yidaki’s interior is architecture by subtraction: a termite-hollowed eucalyptus tube with a naturally uneven, usually narrow air column that compresses the airstream and gives the drone its raw, responsive edge. That simple bore geometry is the whole point, because length and bore width drive pitch and feel far more than decoration ever could. Current public yidaki listings I found sit roughly from about €600 to €1,180 depending on maker and provenance.

2021 Selmer Saxophone

A current SELMER Supreme alto saxophone is a compact brass pressure system built around a precisely reworked neck bore, redefined tone-hole placement, leather pads with rivetless metal resonators, and a metal thumb support; Selmer says those changes improve intonation, response, and homogeneity across the full range. In other words, the “inside” is not hollow in a casual sense, it is a calibrated acoustic corridor. The latest official public price I found is €7,158.33 on Selmer’s international store, with the French store listing it at €8,590.

Saint Mark’s Church Pipe Organ

Saint Mark’s pipe organ is a cathedral-scale network of pipes, reservoirs, blowers, wind lines, leather, wiring, and mechanical action, not just a wall of shiny tubes; the church’s own description says the instrument has 35 stops, 41 ranks, and 2,450 pipes, and that pipe organs contain thousands of components beyond the pipes themselves. The interior architecture is therefore about airflow management and division layout as much as tonal color, with each rank acting like a room in a larger sonic building. The church does not publish a retail price, which is normal for a custom-commissioned organ of this type.

1717 Stradivarius Violin

A 1717 Stradivarius violin is built around a two-piece maple back, spruce top, internal bass bar, soundpost, and carefully graduated arching that turns a tiny wooden shell into a highly responsive resonating system. The interior is also a repair archive: a Stradivari’s value is shaped as much by its restoration history and provenance as by its original woodwork. The exact price of this specific 1717 instrument was not publicly listed in the sources I found; Tarisio notes that the best Stradivari violins are usually sold privately, and its historic reporting cites a violin auction record of $3.6 million.

Acoustic Guitar

A serious steel-string acoustic guitar is a study in tension: the spruce top is braced to move, the back and sides are chosen to reflect or color that movement, and the bridge and bridge plate translate string vibration into air. A current benchmark is the 2025 Martin D-35, which uses a spruce top, East Indian rosewood back and sides, a three-piece rosewood back, and non-scalloped 1/4″ bracing for a clear, balanced response; it is priced at $3,499. That is the sort of interior logic the photo is pointing at.

Meinl Conga Drum

A modern Meinl conga is a shell-and-membrane machine: the body is commonly Siam oak, the head is buffalo hide, and the tension lives in 8 mm lugs and rounded rims that control attack, sustain, and projection. Meinl’s own 2025 pages show the Headliner Traditional 12″ Conga in walnut brown using Siam oak, black powder-coated hardware, and a hand-selected buffalo head, and public pricing for comparable current Meinl congas runs from about €99.90 for small VivaRhythm models to about €301 for a wood Headliner conga.

Kawai Grand Piano Millennium III Action

The Millennium III action is the hidden engine of a Kawai grand: ABS-Carbon parts make the action lighter, faster, and more stable than all-wood actions, while Kawai pairs that with spruce keys, hand-wound bass strings, agraffes, a tapered spruce soundboard, and a rigid rim-and-stretcher system. Kawai says the action is about 25% faster in grands, and a current Shigeru Kawai SK-3 using Millennium III is publicly priced at $100,995 MSRP, while Kawai’s own Thailand listing for the SK-3 shows 1,650,000–1,749,000 baht.

Steinway Spirio R Piano

Spirio | r is a Steinway Model D or other grand with a second layer of interior architecture: high-resolution recording, playback, editing, and Spiriocast installed at manufacture without altering the piano’s acoustic character. Steinway says Spirio | r preserves nuance down to hammer velocity and pedaling while keeping the instrument’s normal touch and tone, and the public price for the underlying current Model D is $246,900; Steinway does not publish an online Spirio | r surcharge, so the Spirio price is quote-based.

Steinway Model D Piano

The Steinway Model D is a concert hall engine built from five solid spruce braces, a tapered diaphragmatic soundboard, vertically laminated bridges capped in maple, and a Hexagrip pinblock designed to hold tension and tuning at scale. Steinway’s own public pricing page lists the current Model D at $246,900, which is the clearest live market figure for the instrument in this collage. The interior is so carefully proportioned that the frame, board, bridges, and pins behave like one structural-acoustic system.

Ibanez Acoustic Guitar

An Ibanez acoustic in the Artwood family shows a modern working interior rather than a museum one: solid mahogany or spruce tops, mahogany back and sides, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, dovetail neck joint, and electronics on some models for stage use. A current Ibanez AW54CEOPN is listed in India at ₹32,205, while an AW54OPN is currently around $229.99 in U.S. retail, so this family sits in the accessible pro/serious-amateur range rather than the boutique tier.

‘Siete Lunas’ Guitar

Roberto Hernández’s ‘Siete Lunas’ turns the guitar interior into a signature spatial device: seven sound holes, French walnut, and German spruce, with the whole form built around pre-Columbian ideas reworked through modern lutherie. The image source also notes that the photograph was made through endoscopic imaging and 94 stacked frames, which is why the internal cavities read like architecture rather than a standard guitar body. I could not find a public sale price for the instrument itself; the only current public pricing I found was for the art print of the image, not the guitar.

1880 Hopf Violin

A Hopf violin from around 1880 usually shows the German workshop logic of a spruce top, maple back and sides, and the familiar squared-ish Hopf outline, but the real story is the wear: cracks, repairs, and revarnishing often become part of the instrument’s identity. One current comparable Hopf example is listed at $1,075, while another sold Hopf from 1880 was listed at $1,500; lower-grade Hopf-branded auction examples can be far less, which is why attribution and condition dominate price.

Jacob Collier’s Custom Taylor Guitar

Taylor’s Jacob Collier signature 5-string guitar family is a very specific interior architecture built around alternate DAEAD tuning, a custom voicing logic, and a body that lets the removed string spacing open up the neck and chord shapes. Taylor’s 2025 price list shows the JCSM-5 at $2,799, while a current Taylor/Jacob Collier Academy 22e is $999 and the GS Mini is $699, making the signature line a real, current design-and-performance platform rather than a one-off celebrity object.

The Architectural Lesson

These instruments teach a brutal but useful design lesson: resonance is architecture. A piano is a tensioned city. A guitar is a braced chamber. A cello is a living body. A flute is a precision corridor. A clarinet is a controlled bore. An oboe is a tiny pressure labyrinth. A French horn is a coiled circulation system. Each one succeeds because the inside is doing the real work.
