Who Needs the Training — Us or Them?

It started with a post I saw on Instagram — a thought-provoking truth about how modern life is quietly making it unnatural for dogs to simply be dogs.

It hit me hard.

We’re overtraining them. Overcontrolling them.

Molding them to fit our social lives, aesthetic homes, and “well-behaved” expectations.

But for what? And at what cost?

We expect them to smile for the camera.
Stay quiet when the bell rings.
Be friendly, but not too friendly.
Be protective, but never bark.
Be clean, never shed.
Be present — but not be seen.

All while forgetting… they didn’t sign up for this. 

They didn’t choose to leave their parents.
They didn’t ask to be adopted for likes or lifestyle. They don’t know what “good manners” or “aesthetic homes” mean.

All they know is love. Instinct. Emotion.
And that you are now their parent.

So why are we constantly asking so much from them without taking the time to understand their world?

Why are we measuring their worth in silence, cleanliness, or obedience — but failing to see their true beauty in sniffing, shedding, barking, spinning in circles, greeting guests with a lick, or resting their chin on our lap without “asking”?

Why are we not training ourselves to be more accepting, patient, and aware?

At this point, it’s becoming inhumane.
We say we rescued them.
But in truth, they’re the ones patiently loving us —
even when we don’t understand them.

They keep trusting us.
And we keep failing that trust.

They expect us to protect them, listen to them, speak for them.
Not hush them down or lock them up for behaving like… well, dogs.

So I wrote a poem.

It poured out of me like a storm of grief and hopelessness —

I wanted to just hold the mirror for preseng dog pents on what they are doing wrong…

How unfair and cruel of these dog parents to treat their canine babies.

It’s time they MUST understand every dog who just wants to be allowed to live like a dog.

🐾 This One’s for Them

Everyone wants a “happy, quiet dog.”
Smiling. Obedient. Insta-ready.

But no fur on the sofa, carpet, bed, car, or clothes.
No drool on the floor.
No smell.
No noise in the home.

They must be protective and friendly —
But:
“No sniffing.”
“No licking.”
“No barking at guests.”

Why not let them live like dogs?
Let them sniff.
Let them shed.
Let them speak — in their ways.

When someone complains…
Let’s take our dog’s side.
Let’s be their protector and their voice.

We say we “adopted” them —
As if it were a favor.
But they were forced to leave their parents
So we could become theirs.

They’re not charity.
Not a social ticket.
They’re our children.

So let’s train ourselves
To be the parents
they believe we are.
